A grant has been raised to scaffold both engine houses and to re-bed the masonry on the tops of both buildings. Further work has been undertaken on the vertical winder house in the form of angle corner pieces, and tie-rods at high level on all corners. The scaffolding on the pump house will be left in position, to act as shoring for the outer walls. Builders 'Acrows' & hard-wood supports have been used on both buildings to support lintels and window arches. Please click on the small pictures which will display larger photos of the renovation work which has been done at the site. Press the vw to navigate left and right.
1/2/2003 Both the Vertical Winder House and the Beam Engine House have now had temporary galvanised roofs fitted, in order for the building to have chance to dry out, Further work at the Glyn depends on the allocation of more funds, and hopefully preservation and restoration work will include both engines as well as the buildings. 1/12/2004 Letters from group members were sent to The Pontypool Regeneration and Heritage Group and Torfaen Community Council for their help with funding for the Glyn Pits project. 22/07/05 Here we can see some photograph’s taken by Mr Ian Perham at Glyn Pits before and after a site clearance, carried out by the volunteers of the Glyn Pits Preservation and Community Heritage Project, who are seen in the group photograph. Clearance was necessary to remove unwanted trees, brambles, ferns, Etc. from both inside and outside of the site perimeter. The reason for the site clearance is two-fold: 1. to have a new, more secure, fence erected to safe guard against vandals and to make the place safe. 2: To make it easier for the site to be geologically surveyed, which hopefully will be done in the winter months of 2005? 8/11/2005 Our Group have recently been successful in securing a Grant from the Torfaen Rural Key Fund. This is a Grant Scheme which is managed by the Local Authority. The aim of the fund is to help support the economic regeneration of the wards that have been designated as rural in Torfaen. The Glyn Pits site is situated in the ward of Cwmynyscoy, which is one of five rural wards in Torfaen, the others being Abersychan, Blaenavon, Two-Locks and Wainfelin. The Rural Key Fund money will be used to carry our a feasibility study at the Glyn Pits site. The Group are currently in the process of receiving tenders from a number of Consultants who have experience in Heritage Projects similar to ours. The successful tender will be commissioned to examine all relevant factors that go to make the Glyn Pits site unique. The final study will be useful on two levels. Firstly, the study will help the group to make a consensus decision about the best way to take the project forward. Secondly, any future application for major funding will be greatly enhanced as a result of the feasibility study. Update 17/11/2005 The site survey mentioned in an earlier update as being carried out in the winter months of 2005, has now been completed by the Royal Society for Ancient Historical Monuments in Wales .
